Studying Animals

Eurogamer describes studying animals for what looks like a Red Dead Redemption 2 style collecting mechanic. For the first time in a mainline GTA, wildlife is content to catalogue, not scenery.

Overview

The confirmed verbs tell the story: study animals, pet dogs, scold dogs, feed strays. Eurogamer’s round-up explicitly compares the study mechanic to Red Dead Redemption 2’s compendium, where observing each species up close filled out a naturalist’s log. GTA 5’s animals existed to be hunted or fled from; this is a different relationship entirely.

Leonida’s confirmed species run from manatees to panthers, all tracked in our wildlife database, and the Leonida Zoo concentrates the rare ones in a single walkable park for checklist hunters.

Why it matters

A study system gives the swamps, forests and reefs a reason to be visited slowly, which is the kind of pacing GTA has historically left to Red Dead. The RDR2 team’s naturalist tech flowing back into GTA is the clearest sign yet of shared DNA between the two series.
