Rockstar has confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look drops on Netflix on August 27, then rolls to YouTube six hours later. This is not Trailer 3, it is a longer showcase, and it is the first time Rockstar has ever picked a streaming platform for a GTA reveal

Quick take
  • Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 12pm PT / 3pm ET / 8pm UK on Thursday, August 27
  • The same showcase goes live on YouTube six hours later, at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on August 27 (2am UK, August 28)
  • Netflix subscribers can already set a reminder at netflix.com/GTAVI
  • This is the first time Rockstar has chosen a streaming platform for a Grand Theft Auto reveal, breaking a two-decade pattern of direct YouTube trailer drops

It Is Actually Happening

Rockstar has confirmed it. Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix on Thursday, August 27. This is not Trailer 3 in the traditional sense. Rockstar is calling it a showcase, which almost certainly means we are finally about to see real GTA 6 gameplay after nearly three years of trailers, screenshots and rumours.

Netflix already has the event page live at netflix.com/GTAVI with the reminder button active. The programme description reads: “Coming August 27: See an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6, the next evolution the Grand Theft Auto series.” That is Rockstar-speak for something big.

When You Can Watch It

Two windows, one showcase. If you have a Netflix subscription, you get it first. If you do not, YouTube gets the same content six hours later, no strings attached.

Two platforms, one showcase, six hours apart. Netflix goes first on August 27, YouTube follows the same evening.

The Rockstar Games YouTube channel and Rockstar Newswire will host the second wave. If you want to avoid spoilers between the two windows, mute a few keywords in the usual places, because the internet is going to be unbearable for six straight hours.

Why Netflix First Is Actually Wild

Take a second to appreciate the Netflix angle. Every Grand Theft Auto trailer since GTA IV in 2007 has dropped on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel first, at the exact same second, for everyone, everywhere. That is the routine every fan grew up with. The Trailer 1 debut in December 2023 broke YouTube view records inside 24 hours by following that exact playbook.

Choosing Netflix for the first look at anything since Trailer 2 is Rockstar telling the industry that GTA 6 is not being marketed as a game. It is being marketed as an event, on the same distribution shelf as a Marvel show or a big-budget documentary. The November 19 launch is now less than fourteen weeks away, and the marketing scale is starting to look proportional to that.

Realistically, the six-hour YouTube gap is a courtesy. Netflix gets the launch window and the co-branded press cycle. The rest of us wait a single evening for a free upload of the exact same content. Whichever platform you catch it on, this is the closest we have come to seeing GTA 6 in motion since the leaks about internal Switch 2 tests earlier this summer.

What To Expect In The Showcase

Rockstar has been sitting on a lot. Two full trailers, an infamous batch of 63 screenshots the community has been dissecting frame by frame, and years of accumulated Vice City media without a single second of extended gameplay. An eight-to-fifteen minute Netflix showcase gives them room to finally show missions in motion, driving, shooting, interiors, the map at a real scale, and if we are lucky, a proper look at Lucia and Jason as playable characters rather than cinematic cutouts.

Do not expect a full-map reveal or a story deep-dive. Rockstar rations information ruthlessly, and there are still three months of hype cycle left to fill. Expect a curated highlight reel that raises more questions than it answers, and expect it to break the internet anyway.

Set the reminder. Log off Twitter around 11am PT on the 27th. See you on the other side.
