One brother runs Rockstar and has barely given interviews in twenty years. The other wrote almost every GTA and both Red Deads, then walked out in 2020 without explanation. GTA 6 is the first mainline GTA finished after Dan Houser left the building.
- Rockstar was founded in December 1998 by five people after Take-Two bought BMG Interactive: Sam and Dan Houser, Terry Donovan, Gary Foreman and Jamie King.
- Sam started in BMG’s post room in 1990 and has been Rockstar’s president since day one. Dan is credited as a writer on twelve GTA titles plus both Red Dead Redemptions.
- Dan left in March 2020 with no explanation and founded Absurd Ventures in 2021, where ex Rockstar writers Lazlow Jones and Michael Unsworth later joined him.
- Across nearly three hours with Lex Fridman in October 2025, Dan never explains why he left.
- GTA 6 has been in development since around 2015, so its early years carry Houser fingerprints even with Dan gone.
Why Two Brothers Matter to GTA 6
Every long thread about GTA 6 eventually arrives at the same question: how much of the old voice is still in the machine. The old voice belongs to two London brothers. Sam Houser has run Rockstar since it existed and has spent two decades avoiding cameras and interviews with a discipline most politicians would envy. Dan Houser wrote or co-wrote the scripts that made the company’s name, then left in 2020 and has never said why. Between them they built the studio, the tone and the business now carrying Jason and Lucia to November 19.
This page is the record: where the brothers came from, what each actually did, who else mattered, and what their split means for the game covered everywhere else on this site. The production side of that story, studios, timeline and process, lives in the development guide. This one is about the people.

Get Carter, a Solicitor and the BMG Post Room
The Housers grew up in London around film and music rather than software. Their mother, Geraldine Moffat, is the actress best known for the 1971 crime classic Get Carter, and their father, Walter Houser, was a solicitor and jazz saxophonist who died in 2025. Sam, born in 1971, joined the music giant BMG in 1990, starting in the post room and working up through video production into the company’s new interactive division, where he was head of development by 1996. Dan, two years younger, read geography at Oxford and took a part-time job at BMG Interactive in 1995, testing CD-ROMs for his brother’s division.
The decision that built everything came from a preview disc. The brothers saw an unremarkable-looking DMA Design project called Race’n’Chase, signed it to BMG Interactive as publisher, and renamed it Grand Theft Auto. The 1997 original was a top-down curiosity with a getaway-driver heart, and it sold on exactly the instinct the Housers would spend twenty years refining: let the player be the criminal.
Five Founders and a December 1998 Start
When Take-Two bought BMG Interactive in 1998, the brothers moved with the deal to New York and founded Rockstar Games that December, alongside Terry Donovan, Gary Foreman and Jamie King. The division of labour set immediately and never really moved. Sam became president, the operator and executive producer, the one pushing the 3D leap that became GTA 3. Dan became the writer, credited across twelve GTA titles as the scripts grew from radio-station gags into the social satire of Vice City, San Andreas, GTA 4 and GTA 5, plus both Red Dead Redemptions.

The Third Man: Leslie Benzies
No honest version of this story has only two names in it. Leslie Benzies, a programmer who started at DMA Design in 1995, became president of Rockstar North and the lead producer on every mainline GTA from 3 through 5, GTA Online included. If the Housers were the voice and the will, Benzies was the machine that shipped it. His exit was uglier than Dan’s: a sabbatical in 2014 turned into a lockout, a departure confirmed in 2016, and a lawsuit over unpaid royalties reported at 150 million dollars. Rockstar called the claims bizarre, a court dismissed twelve of the eighteen counts in 2018, and the rest ended in a confidential settlement in 2019.
The coda arrived this year: Build A Rocket Boy, the studio Benzies founded to chase his post-Rockstar ambitions, entered administration in 2026 after its debut shipped rough. It is the sharpest available counterexample to the idea that any one person carried Rockstar’s magic out the door, and it cuts in every direction, Dan’s included.

Dan Walks, Absurd Ventures Rises
Rockstar announced Dan’s departure in February 2020, effective that March, in a securities filing of all places, and offered no reason. Neither has he. In 2021 he quietly registered Absurd Ventures, announced it publicly in June 2023, and built it into a story company spanning games, audio fiction and books out of Santa Monica. The hires say plenty about whose company it is: Lazlow Jones, Rockstar’s longtime radio and comedy voice, joined in 2023, and Michael Unsworth, a Rockstar writing veteran who worked on GTA 6 before leaving in 2023, followed the same year.
The closest thing to an explanation on record is an absence. In October 2025 Dan sat with Lex Fridman for nearly three hours, his first long interview in decades, talking westerns, Zelda, writing process and Absurd’s projects. The exit from the company he co-founded gets no answer at all. For a writer whose characters monologue their motives at gunpoint, the silence reads as deliberate, and I price rumours about the reason at exactly what their sourcing supports: nothing.

The Fingerprints on GTA 6
So how much Houser is in GTA 6? More than the departure date suggests. The game has been in development since around 2015 per the Trois Couleurs magazine visit to Rockstar North, which means Dan was in the building for roughly the first five years, the span where a Rockstar game’s premise, city and leads get locked. Unsworth worked on it before his 2023 exit. The narrative lead named in that French interview is Rupert Humphries, whose page-and-a-half outline the team built the story from, and Sam remains president of the company shipping it. The tonal DNA, satire, radio, doomed-romance criminality, was standardised by the brothers whether or not either types a word of the final script.
What is genuinely new is the institution around the voice. The Rockstar of 2026 answers to unions and employment tribunals, one of which opened in Glasgow weeks before launch, and its writing room is a bench rather than a byline. Whether that machine can produce the thing the brothers produced is the most expensive open question in entertainment.
