GTA 6 Wanted System: Six Stars, Heat and How to Escape

+5 XP for Sharing

GTA 6 restores the six-star wanted level and layers a heat system on top: police remember your face, clothes, weapons and car until you make them forget. Every star state, every heat icon and every escape route, mapped out in one guide.

Quick take
  • The wanted level returns to six stars, and per IGN’s hands-on the sixth sends police searching for you across the whole of Leonida.
  • A new heat layer tracks what the police actually know: CCTV footage, your outfit, your face, your weapons, your vehicle and whether you were seen as a couple.
  • Stars now have four states. Solid means line of sight, flashing means you are close to losing them, hollow means no description, red means lingering heat.
  • Police no longer appear on the minimap. You find them with Focus, a screen-edge light indicator and your own eyes.

Why the Cops Finally Got a Memory

Six stars are back. After GTA 5 trimmed the scale to five, the Extended Look and the press hands-on sessions at Rockstar North confirm the wanted level returns to six stars, and IGN’s preview adds the intended spread: one star is meant to be relatively easy to escape, six is the classic high-chaos getaway. That much is tradition restored. What sits underneath it is not.

Alongside the stars runs a new heat system, a layer that tracks what the police actually know about you rather than just how angry they are. Rob Nelson explained the thinking to creators who visited Rockstar North: the team wanted to get past the old routine where you lose the cops instantly and they forget you instantly, and give them, in his words, a bit more persistent memory. When the August clips leaked we could only guess at half of this. The evidence ledger still holds those leak-era readings, and the leaks guide tracks how the clips escaped in the first place. This page is the confirmed system.

Solid, Flashing, Red and Hollow Stars

The stars themselves now talk to you. Four states, four different situations, and the showcase runs through every one of them inside a single chase. Learn to read the row at a glance, because the state you are in dictates your next move before the sirens even close.

  • Solid white: the police have direct line of sight. Your first job is to break it, and nothing else matters until you do.
  • Flashing white: the sightline is gone and you are close to losing them. Hold your nerve and keep moving.
  • Hollow: officers have been dispatched with no description at all. Per IGN, leave the scene without drawing attention and you should be in the clear.
  • Red: the police have lost you but remember you. A full description stays on file, and officers should not spot you unless you walk right up to them.

Hollow stars are why the showcase can afford the joke of Lucia flipping off a passing patrol car. They have no idea who they are looking for. Red is honestly the best news on the screen, and the 99-details breakdown notes the white-to-red shift lands right after a line of police dialogue about losing eyes on the suspect’s vehicle. Four states, then: chased, nearly free, unknown, and remembered.

The Heat Icons Under Your Stars

Under the stars sits the heat row, and this is where GTA 6 stops tracking a crime and starts tracking you. In the Extended Look’s convenience store robbery, five indicators appear: a CCTV camera, a two-person icon showing Jason and Lucia have been recognised as a couple, an outfit marker, a face for facial recognition and a weapon icon telling police to expect armed resistance. A sixth, a vehicle icon, joins the row once the cops learn what you are driving. We first mapped these recognition icons frame by frame when the leaked clips surfaced, in our police identification analysis, and the showcase has since confirmed the reading and expanded it.

Each icon is an instruction as much as a warning. The hands-on reporting frames the row as a readout of the police’s persistent memory that tells you exactly what to act on to lose them faster. One creator watching the showcase put the whole redesign in a single line: the game is not just tracking a crime, it is tracking the fact that Jason and Lucia committed it together, and the getaway is no longer about distance.

No Witness Means No Wanted Level

Here is the part that changes street crime completely: a crime nobody sees is not a crime. Per IGN, the wanted system only kicks in once an NPC witnesses the offence or an alarm triggers, and Rob Nelson’s version adds the third route: someone reports it, usually by phone, or you steal a vehicle fitted with a tracker that phones it in for them. The response begins with somebody seeing you, hearing something, pressing an alarm button or a lens catching the moment.

Take a second to appreciate what that does to an ordinary carjacking. Pull a driver out of their car and, as Nelson puts it, they are going to call the cops and you are going to have a bunch of trouble. Find the same car parked with nobody around and you get away clean. The whole city is a potential witness, which is exactly the design brief of the living world systems, and Rockstar has promised more nuance in how hard you are hunted depending on severity, treating violent and nonviolent confrontations differently. The people of Leonida are not passive scenery either. A long gun on your back is tolerated, carrying it in hand moves people away, and aiming it makes NPCs panic or pull concealed weapons of their own, with cops giving a warning before they escalate. Constantly fleeing the police even wears on how Jason and Lucia physically look over time.

Search Circles, Heat Zones and Cooldowns

Lose sight of the cops and geography takes over. At one to five stars the map draws two circles: a dark red circle where the crime happened and a larger, lighter search radius around it, and your target is the edge of the big one. Shake the pursuit and the radius transforms into a heat zone, usually a neighbourhood-sized area the police block off and patrol while knowing roughly who they are looking for rather than exactly where you are. Per IGN the hot area stays marked on the map even after you leave and cools down over time, and officers will keep a perimeter around a robbed store for a while, just in case you are daft enough to come back.

Scale is the lever. A small store robbery earns a perimeter the size of a small neighbourhood, while the sixth star ends the geometry altogether: creators relaying the hands-on all report the same claim in slightly different words, a map-wide search, a hunt across Leonida, one account calling it statewide at the upper levels. Reaching six is deliberately hard, which is the point. Stay unseen inside a zone and the search slowly ticks down. Rockstar’s own reference point is clearly Red Dead Redemption 2: wanted status localised to an area, so distance from the scene genuinely matters again.

Police Are Off the Minimap Now

Police no longer appear on the minimap. Read that again, because it retires the routine every fan grew up with: watching cones and dots in the corner while barely looking at the actual road. Rob Nelson’s explanation, relayed from Rockstar North, is blunt. It can be harder, but it is fun, and you have to think more. The replacement tools live on the screen instead of the map: Focus mode highlights officers, through walls included, and IGN notes the same system flags useful items in the world, while a red and blue light at the bottom edge of the screen shows which direction the police are coming from. The full Focus breakdown lives in the combat and gunplay guide. One livestreamer watching that indicator predicted evading police is going to be very difficult to learn, and that reaction is a preview of everyone’s first week in November.

How You Clear Every Single Indicator

Every indicator has a fix, and the fixes map one to one. Wipe the CCTV footage before you leave the store. Tell Jason and Lucia to split up and the couple icon dies, and IGN notes the separated partner texts you once the coast is clear. Change outfits, ideally into the spare set stored in your personal vehicle. Change your appearance, a new haircut will do it, and stash or drop the weapon you were seen holding. Half measures fail on purpose: per IGN, glasses or a new hat are not enough to disrupt the description, you need a whole new outfit, which is exactly why keeping fresh clothes in the trunk is a great idea.

Masks are the pre-emptive version. Equip one before the crime and remove it during the escape and no description of your face ever reaches the police, even if a camera catches you, which is why masking up before a job is standard practice in the robbery system. The item wheel carries a whole Masks category, Face Wrap included, alongside hats, outfits and eyewear, and the coat hanger option lets you change clothes at your vehicle mid-escape. Ignore the row at your peril. Per the hands-on reporting, unfixed indicators not only make the police harder to lose now, they leave you quickly recognisable long after the stars are gone.

Trackers, Resprays and Torched Cars

The vehicle icon gets a toolkit of its own. The showcase demonstrates the brutal option: Lucia torches the recognised car with a Molotov and the vehicle icon drops off the HUD on the spot, after which Jason, Lucia and Raul can let the police drive right past them. The gentler routes work too. Switch cars when you find a quiet moment, or visit a returning pay and spray, branded Am Loco in the showcase, for a quick respray in one of roughly six to eight basic colours. Nelson notes car fences and pay and sprays are not necessarily available from the start; some of this opens up as the narrative unfolds.

Trackers are the counterweight. A lot of cars carry them and every cop car does, which makes losing a wanted level in one close to impossible, though one preview summary claims older cop cars go untracked. Higher-end trackers run a minigame of their own: drive fast and they stay silent, slow down and they start beeping, linger too long and they ping your location straight to the police. And do not assume an abandoned personal car is safe. If the police know it is yours they stake it out, and if you leave it too long they impound it, at which point you pay extra to get it out or steal it back from the lot.

What Actually Works When You Run

So what should you actually do when the sirens start? The previews sketch the meta. Cops shoot out tyres now, and driving on a blown tyre is far harder than it was in GTA 5. At three stars or higher in the city, IGN warns escape is rough without a genuinely fast car. The intended playstyle, per IGN, is hit and run, in and out before the response even forms, and some confrontations never need stars at all, since aiming a gun without firing can send an NPC running, though story missions sometimes force the escalation. When the chase forms anyway, run the routine.

  1. Break line of sight. Solid stars mean they can see you, and until that changes nothing else on this list matters.
  2. Route with Focus, not the minimap. Highlight officers through walls and watch the red and blue light at the screen edge for the direction the response is coming from.
  3. Get out of the search circle. Aim for the edge of the lighter red radius, and if traffic locks up, take to the alleys on foot with the reworked running, jumping and climbing.
  4. Shed the vehicle icon. Torch the car, respray it or switch to something boring, and mind the tracker: slow down too long in a tracked car and it pings your location to the police.
  5. Fix your description. Change into the spare outfit at your vehicle, and split up if the couple icon is showing.
  6. Let the heat zone cool. Stay unseen inside the marked area, keep away from the crime scene where police linger longest, and wait for the red stars to fade.

The showcase’s four-star chase runs that exact routine. Jason and Lucia collect Raul after his Friday morning bank job in the getaway, shoot at tyres and engines through the pursuit, break line of sight and torch the car in a parking lot. Note what does not work: they duck into an alley thinking they are free, and the police track them there anyway. Hiding is a tool, not a win button. Worth knowing too: every police vehicle trunk carries a shotgun or an assault rifle plus body armour, per the creator who played at Rockstar North, so a survived chase doubles as a supply run.

If it all goes wrong, arrest is soft. The traditional busted screen appears and you respawn into the world, at the police station per one preview summary, even if your partner is still mid-escape, and cash on hand can be lost on death and possibly on arrest. The stated design target is Red Dead Redemption 2 at a faster pace, serious rather than arcadey. In plain terms: the cops finally remember, so make yourself forgettable. Keep a change of clothes in the trunk and a boring car around the corner. You will want both by the second week of November.
