The Weather Channel, SNL and South Park Are All Covering GTA 6 Now

+5 XP for Sharing

GTA 6 coverage has left gaming media entirely. The Weather Channel posted about Leonida’s dynamic hurricanes, Saturday Night Live sat Jason Duval at the Weekend Update desk opposite Zelda’s Link, South Park has made November a season-long punchline, and brands from BMW to T-Mobile keep copying the Vice City art style without being asked.

Quick take
  • The Weather Channel posted that GTA 6 “is bringing meteorological realism to gaming”, citing Leonida’s hurricanes and tropical storms.
  • SNL’s October 3 Weekend Update had Marcello Hernández as Jason Duval facing Mikey Day’s Link in a November release face-off.
  • South Park has repeated the same joke across season 29: things will get better in November.
  • Brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and T-Mobile copied the Vice City album art style, echoing the 2023 trailer-announcement copycats.

The Weather Channel Does Leonida

The Weather Channel, the actual American weather network, posted that Grand Theft Auto VI “is bringing meteorological realism to gaming with dynamic severe weather” across Leonida, warning that players will deal with hurricanes and tropical storms that affect both the environment and the game’s mechanics. A weather network previewing the forecast inside a game that is still a month from release is a genuinely new category of coverage.

The underlying facts come from the Game Informer cover story we covered in September: a re-engineered weather system that is localised and persistent, so it can pour in one part of Vice City while the next neighbourhood stays sunny, with clouds that physically cross the map, wind pushed around by buildings, and puddles and wet streets that linger after a storm, up to tropical storms and full hurricanes. Rockstar has not said how far a hurricane can disrupt missions. The Weather Channel is apparently not waiting to find out.

Jason Takes the Weekend Update Desk

On the October 3 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Dakota Johnson, Weekend Update’s Colin Jost brought out two guests to settle November’s big gaming showdown: Marcello Hernández as GTA 6’s Jason Duval and Mikey Day as Link, there for the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake that launches the same month. The bit ran as a face-off, Jason mocking Link’s whole look, Link going after the Vice City lifestyle, and it ended with Jason producing a rocket launcher and Link answering with a fairy in a bottle. IGN wrote it up the next morning.

Strip the jokes out and the premise is the story: a sketch show with a general audience assumed everyone watching knows who Jason Duval is, before the game exists. The two launches only share a month because other games cleared out of the way, which is also why the joke works at all.

South Park Keeps Saying November

South Park has been running the longest version of the gag. The season 29 premiere in mid-September had the adults repeating that things will hopefully get better in November, with the release date as the unspoken punchline, and a later episode escalated it: power outages only become a crisis once they threaten people’s future GTA 6 progress, and an exterminator delivers the same November line. The show has effectively redefined a month. For most Americans November means Thanksgiving; this year a cartoon keeps insisting it means a video game.

Brands Keep Borrowing the Look

The third strand is visual. When the artists on GTA VI: The Album started posting their Rockstar-supplied Vice City artwork, brands with no official connection piled into the same style, with creator round-ups counting BMW, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Yamaha, Turtle Beach and T-Mobile among the imitators. It is a rerun of December 2023, when the trailer announcement’s palm trees and sunset gradient were copied within days by game studios and football clubs alike.

Stack it with the rest of the season and the pattern is hard to miss: Spotify billboards for the album in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, YouTube promoting it in Times Square, fashion features in Dazed and Love, the Brooklyn mural, and the Miami Heat turning into Vice City for a night on November 18. Each item alone is marketing trivia. Together they describe a game that mainstream culture has decided to treat as an event on the scale of a film release, except films do not usually get their weather forecast covered.
