After seven months of fan math, pixel-counting and GTA 5 mod recreations, Rockstar has simply said it. The GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and Vice City on its own doubles Los Santos.
- Rockstar’s Rob Nelson confirmed the map is twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of RDR2, the studio’s biggest world ever.
- Vice City proper is twice the size of Los Santos. Add the suburbs and greater Vice City works out to roughly eleven times Los Santos and its surrounds.
- A fresh save starts with fog of war on the map. Districts uncover as you actually reach them, RDR2 style.
- Streets are narrower and realistically scaled, with heavy traffic running on base PS5 and near-infinite draw distance from rooftops.
- The Extended Look showed almost nothing of the northern map. No Grassrivers footage at all, and one brief Mount Kalaga dirt-bike shot.
The Numbers, From Rockstar This Time
Rob Nelson finally did what no leak, no pixel-counter and no Reddit cartographer could: he put official numbers on Leonida. Speaking around the Extended Look press cycle, the Rockstar veteran confirmed the map is twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. It is the biggest world the studio has ever built, which everyone assumed, and now nobody has to assume.
The city figure is the one that lands hardest. Vice City proper is twice the size of Los Santos. Fold in the suburbs and greater Vice City comes out around eleven times Los Santos and its surrounding sprawl. GameSpot’s own preview read the whole world as roughly double GTA 5’s, which squares with Nelson’s framing rather than inflating it.
For seven months this site has covered the community’s attempts to reverse-engineer these numbers, from the GTA 5 mod recreation of Leonida to coordinate math pulled off leaked debug footage. The fan estimates mostly landed in the right postcode. The difference now is that the anchor figures come from the studio, not the spreadsheet.

The Official Scale Sheet
// How Leonida measures against Rockstar’s back catalogue
Every official comparison Rockstar has given, in one table. No fan estimates mixed in.
| Comparison | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Leonida vs GTA 5’s map | 2x | Rob Nelson |
| Leonida vs RDR2 playable area | 3x | Rob Nelson |
| Vice City vs Los Santos | 2x | Rob Nelson |
| Greater Vice City vs Los Santos + surrounds | ~11x | Press event reporting |
| Whole world vs GTA 5’s world | ~2x | GameSpot preview |
One caution before anyone starts converting to square kilometres: Rockstar gave ratios, not areas. Multiplying fan-estimated GTA 5 figures by two produces a fan estimate wearing an official coat. The ratios are the confirmed part, so those are what we publish.
What Actually Fills the Space
Size claims are cheap in open world marketing. Density is the expensive part, and it is where the Extended Look did its real arguing. Streets in Vice City are narrower and closer to real Miami proportions than the boulevards of Los Santos, and they run heavy traffic on a base PS5. From rooftops the draw distance reads as effectively infinite, with aircraft crossing the sky and planes, helicopters and trains moving in nearly every city shot.
The variety list from the previews runs long: packed beaches, the Keys, airboat wetlands, working ports, highway sprawl, rural towns, nightlife districts, hotels and airports, plus water routes threading all of it together. A full region-by-region breakdown lives on our Leonida page.
And you will not see it all at once. A fresh save covers the map in fog of war, with districts uncovering as you physically reach them. GTA 5 handed you its whole map on day one. Leonida makes you earn the atlas, the way RDR2 did.

The Part Nobody Has Shown
Now the asterisk. For all its 26 minutes, the Extended Look was a Vice City show. Grassrivers, the swamp region the leaks have made famous, got zero seconds of footage. Mount Kalaga appeared once, briefly, under a dirt bike. The whole northern half of the confirmed region list is still running on leaked material and trailer frames.
The sharpest eyes caught one more crumb: a roughly three second glimpse of the in-game map that appears to show an airport or military base down in the Leonida Keys, and no panhandle to speak of. That is a frame-by-frame community read of a blurry pause menu, so file it as speculation until Rockstar shows the map on purpose, but it matches what the northern Leonida coverage has hinted at for months.
