GTA 6 Runs at a Locked 30fps and Native 1440p on PS5, and the 60fps Question Finally Has an Answer

+5 XP for Sharing

Digital Foundry ran the numbers on the Extended Look and the verdict is in: a locked 30fps at native 1440p on a base PS5, no upscaling tricks. The 60fps hopefuls will not like the reasoning, because the bottleneck is not the graphics card.

Quick take
  • Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look at a locked 30fps, rendered at native 1440p on a base PS5 with no FSR or temporal upscaling.
  • Frame pacing held stable across the full 26:48 runtime, with only rare single-frame drops. Trailer 2, for comparison, ran at roughly 80 percent of 1440p with FSR.
  • DF judges a 60fps console mode extremely unlikely. Their analysis points at the CPU, not the GPU: simulation and physics saturate the 33.3ms frame budget.
  • Rockstar developers have said higher frame-rate modes will be considered for post-launch updates, and the PS5 store page lists the game as enhanced for PS5 Pro.
  • No Series S or Series X footage has been shown. Rockstar says only that it is happy with how the game runs on Xbox.

What Digital Foundry Actually Measured

The Extended Look settled a two year argument in 26 minutes and 48 seconds. Digital Foundry put the footage through frame analysis and came back with numbers, not vibes: a locked 30fps, rendered at native 1440p on a base PS5, then spatially upscaled to 4K. No FSR. No temporal reconstruction. The end card said captured on PS5 and nothing in the pixel counts contradicts it.

Locked means locked here. Pacing held steady across the full runtime with only scattered single-frame drops, which is unusually clean for a Rockstar open world still three months from launch. The one blemish DF keeps flagging is an old RAGE engine habit, a faint camera judder on some animation transitions that has survived every game since GTA 4.

The comparison that matters is Trailer 2. That footage ran at roughly 80 percent of 1440p with FSR smoothing over the gaps. Fifteen months later the game renders more pixels natively while the streets got busier. Whatever optimisation pass happened between May 2025 and now, it worked.

Why 60fps Is Probably Not Coming to Consoles

Here is the part the wishful threads keep skipping. A 60fps mode is not blocked by resolution, so dropping to 1080p would not buy one. DF reads the 30fps cap as CPU-bound: the simulation, the physics, the crowds and the traffic already fill the 33.3ms frame budget, and halving that budget to 16.7ms would mean halving the world, not the pixels. That is their analysis rather than a Rockstar statement, and we grade it as such, but it is analysis from the people who counted the frames.

The official line leaves one door open. Rockstar developers told press that higher frame-rate modes will be considered for post-launch updates. Considered is doing a lot of work in that sentence, but it is the first time the studio has acknowledged the question at all.

Crowds like this are the reason DF points at the CPU. Every head in this shot is simulation time the frame budget has to pay for.Rockstar Games

Then there is the Pro. The PlayStation store page lists GTA 6 as enhanced for PS5 Pro alongside Tempest 3D audio, haptics, adaptive triggers and fast loading, and Rockstar is not ready to discuss what enhanced means. The 60fps-on-Pro rumour floating around the subreddits is exactly that, a rumour with no source attached, so treat it accordingly.

Two rows deserve a second look. Every preview event ran on PS5 hardware and every second of public footage came from Sony machines, so the entire Xbox picture currently rests on one word from Rockstar. And the Series S row is blank, which is not nothing for a machine Microsoft requires parity for.

What This Means If You Are Buying at Launch

Buy the console version expecting 30fps, full stop. The game was built around that budget, previewers played it that way, and nobody who has touched it has complained about the feel. Rockstar shipped RDR2 at 30 and it aged fine.

The PC crowd is playing a different game entirely, the waiting one. No PC version is announced, and if the cap really is CPU-side, the eventual port will ask a lot from processors rather than graphics cards. The X3D-class CPU chatter in the PC forums is speculation, but it is pointed in a sensible direction. Our system requirements guide tracks that conversation as it firms up.

One more thing worth filing: this is the first mainline GTA to launch into an ecosystem where the mid-generation console refresh already exists. How Rockstar treats the Pro between now and November 19 will say plenty about how it plans to treat performance modes after launch.
