Four dated games have left November 19 and three studios said GTA 6 was the reason. The ones that stayed ran early instead, producing a record autumn of highly rated releases, and Circana already sees PS5 pulling ahead of Xbox.
- Squadron 42 to Q2 2027, Fable to February 23, Lords of the Fallen 2 to Q1 2027, Danganronpa 2x2 to January 14; Chris Roberts named GTA 6 outright.
- By October 31, 62 games released in 2026 had a Metascore of 85 or more, a record, because publishers ran early rather than late.
- Circana September: PS5 units up 22 percent and dollars up 43 percent in the US, Xbox Series units down 27 percent to an all-time September low.
- Piscatella credits Wolverine, not GTA 6, for the PS5 jump; the real test is the October and November reports.
Four Games, Four Ways of Saying the Same Thing
Nobody has to guess any more about what a GTA launch does to a release calendar, because four publishers have now moved dated games out of November and three of them said why. The bluntest was Chris Roberts at Cloud Imperium, who pushed Squadron 42 from 2026 to the second quarter of 2027 and wrote that he had no interest in launching a game with twelve years of work in it “into the attention buzz saw of GTA6”, adding that even without a PC version this November, “pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it”. Xbox moved Fable to February 23, 2027 with a statement about planning its launches through the holidays so the game could have “the dedicated moment it deserves”, and Playground’s Ralph Fulton had already said the move was partly about “obviously avoiding Grand Theft Auto”.
// The movers
Dated games that left the GTA 6 window, and whether the studio said so.
| Game | Was | Now | Named GTA 6? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squadron 42 (Cloud Imperium) | 2026 | Q2 2027 | Yes, in Chris Roberts’ letter |
| Fable (Xbox, Playground) | autumn 2026 | February 23, 2027 | Director said it in interviews |
| Lords of the Fallen 2 (CI Games) | autumn 2026 | Q1 2027 | “Highly competitive holiday period” |
| Danganronpa 2x2 (Spike Chunsoft) | 2026 | January 14, 2027 | “A certain AAA/AAAA title”, plus a joke |
CI Games’ Marek Tyminski moved Lords of the Fallen 2 to the first quarter of 2027 for more polish time and, in the same statement, because the new window “strategically positions Lords of the Fallen 2 outside of a highly competitive holiday period”. Spike Chunsoft’s producer cited development time for Danganronpa 2x2 and the wish to avoid “a certain AAA/AAAA title”, and series creator Kazutaka Kodaka joked that he would not have time to make the game while playing GTA 6.
The Rush to Get Out Before It
The other half of the story is the games that ran the other way. By October 31, 62 games released in 2026 had a Metascore of 85 or higher, the highest tally The Ringer could find on record against a median of 43 for the years it compared, and the explanation its writers landed on was the obvious one: August, September and October were jammed because everyone wanted to be reviewed, played and finished before November 19. Capcom pulled Onimusha: Way of the Sword forward three weeks, from September 25 to September 4, rather than risk the back end of the autumn. In November itself, the only large releases left standing are GTA 6, the Ocarina of Time remake and WoW: Forever.

Rockstar did its share of the moving. The game slipped from an original 2025 window to May 2026 and then to November 19, and each of those two delays rearranged other people’s plans a second time. Publishers who had scheduled around a spring GTA found themselves scheduling around an autumn one, which is partly why the late-summer pile-up was so steep.
The Console Numbers Are Already Moving
Circana’s September figures for the United States show the hardware market tilting before the game is even out. PlayStation 5 unit sales rose 22 percent year on year and dollar sales 43 percent. Xbox Series unit sales fell 27 percent to what Circana called an all-time September low, Switch 2 units were down 14 percent, and total US games spending slipped one percent to $4.8 billion while hardware spending grew 12 percent to $362 million.
Honesty requires the caveat Circana’s Mat Piscatella gave himself: he credited Marvel’s Wolverine, not GTA 6, as the main driver of September’s PS5 jump. GTA 6 excitement was in the mix, but the measurable surge was a superhero. The October and November reports are where the “plays best on PS5” line and the pre-order split start showing up in hardware.

What the Empty Month Means
For players the practical effect is simple: there is nothing else competing for your week of November 19, and the reviews that land on November 18 will have the whole industry’s attention rather than a slice of it. For the rest of the business the next data point is Take-Two’s earnings call on November 9, which is the last scheduled chance for a hard pre-order or shipment number before launch.
