Rockstar India reportedly has more than 1,600 people on GTA 6, the largest team in Rockstar’s network. From a handful of GTA 5 animators to Bangalore’s current scale, this is how AAA production quietly changed.
- Rockstar India reportedly has around 1,600 people working on GTA 6, which would make Bangalore the largest single studio in Rockstar’s network.
- The reported progression: roughly 7 to 10 India-based animators on GTA 5, more than 200 developers on Red Dead Redemption 2, then GTA 6’s current scale.
- Rockstar formally established Rockstar India in 2016 and folded in Dhruva Interactive’s roughly 300 employees in 2019.
- The 1,600 figure comes from Kiwi Talkz host Reece Reilly and is reported, not an official Rockstar or Take-Two headcount.
What the Reports Actually Claim
Rockstar India reportedly has more than 1,600 people contributing to GTA 6, potentially making the Bangalore operation Rockstar Games’ largest individual development studio. Although Rockstar has not published a current studio-by-studio headcount, multiple reports and comments from Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly place the Indian team at the center of the company’s worldwide production.
The studio’s growth did not begin with GTA 6. Rockstar gradually expanded its Indian development operation across GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 before increasing its scale significantly for the company’s current project.
Rockstar’s Indian Team Started Small on GTA 5
According to Reilly, approximately seven to ten India-based animators contributed to GTA 5. At the time, much of Rockstar’s Indian production support came through a dedicated unit operated with Technicolor rather than the standalone internal studio that exists today.
Rockstar’s relationship with Indian developers extended beyond basic administrative support. Teams contributed directly to production tasks such as animation and art, giving Rockstar access to an experienced talent pool while its main studios worked across increasingly large projects.
The small GTA 5 group became an early test of a development strategy that would expand during Rockstar’s next game. Instead of treating India as a temporary outsourcing destination, the company began building a long-term internal presence.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Changed the Studio’s Scale
Reilly says the Indian contribution grew to more than 200 developers during Red Dead Redemption 2. The game required enormous quantities of animation, environmental art, wildlife, clothing, props and character detail, making it well suited to development across several interconnected Rockstar studios.

Rockstar India is officially credited as part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 development team. The project demonstrated that a large group in Bangalore could contribute to one of Rockstar’s most technically complex games while working inside its shared production system.
Rockstar Games formally established Rockstar India in Bangalore in 2016. In 2019, it acquired Dhruva Interactive and integrated its approximately 300 employees into the operation, adding an experienced studio with a long history of art production and game development.
More Than 1,600 People May Be Working on GTA 6

Current reports place Rockstar India’s GTA 6 workforce at approximately 1,600 people. Reilly describes it as the largest studio within Rockstar’s network, ahead of the locations historically associated with leading Grand Theft Auto development.
The figure is not an official headcount released by Rockstar or Take-Two, so it should be treated as reported rather than confirmed. Public information showed Rockstar India at approximately 800 employees in 2019, while later estimates indicate that the operation continued growing substantially during GTA 6’s production.
Some reports have connected the studio with a major portion of GTA 6’s environmental work, including Vice Beach. Rockstar has not provided a detailed breakdown of which studio created each district, and modern Rockstar games are built collaboratively rather than divided into completely independent regional assignments.

Why Rockstar Expanded So Aggressively in India
AAA game development requires thousands of detailed assets, from ordinary shop interiors and road signs to clothing, vehicles, animations and background objects. Increasing visual detail makes those workloads larger with every generation, even when the playable map does not grow at the same rate.

Bangalore offers a substantial pool of artists, animators and engineers at lower operating costs than cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Diego or Edinburgh. Reilly argues that Rockstar recognized this economic shift earlier than many Western publishers and began building the necessary production structure years before GTA 6 entered its final stages.
Lower costs are only part of the explanation. A team working inside Rockstar can use its tools, production methods and security systems more closely than a collection of temporary external vendors. Keeping important development work in-house may also reduce the risk of unfinished GTA 6 assets spreading across numerous outside companies.
Rockstar India Is More Than a Support Studio
The term “support studio” can suggest a small team handling secondary tasks after the main developers finish their work. That description does not fit an operation reportedly employing more than 1,600 people on the same project.

GTA 6 is being developed collectively across Rockstar’s international network. Rockstar North remains closely associated with the creative leadership of Grand Theft Auto, but production at this scale depends on coordinated work from studios specializing in art, animation, technology, quality assurance and world construction.
Rockstar India’s reported growth shows how the structure of AAA development has changed since GTA 5. One studio may guide the creative direction, but no single office can independently build a game containing Leonida’s cities, wilderness, characters, vehicles and interactive systems.
From a Handful of Animators to Rockstar’s Biggest Team
The reported progression is striking: fewer than a dozen India-based animators on GTA 5, more than 200 contributors during Red Dead Redemption 2 and approximately 1,600 people working on GTA 6. The individual figures have not all been officially verified, but the broader expansion of Rockstar India is well documented.
Rockstar’s acquisition of Dhruva Interactive, continued hiring in Bangalore and collaborative production model placed the studio in a strong position before GTA 6 reached full development. What began as a relatively small contribution has grown into one of the most important parts of Rockstar’s global operation.
When GTA 6 arrives, Rockstar North may remain the name most players associate with the series. Behind it, however, Rockstar India appears to be carrying a substantial part of the workload required to build Leonida at its current scale.
