Kayaking

Unlike most of the activities returning from older games, kayaking is a genuine first for the series, and it is now confirmed as playable: Rockstar’s screenshots show kayaks being paddled down the rivers of Mount Kalaga, and the Extended Look shows kayaking in Vice City in a run of Keys and waterfront activities alongside jet skiing and diving. Moving through a heavily trafficked waterway in such a small craft gives the world a real sense of scale, and a paddle boat fits Leonida’s geography perfectly, opening up the narrow, shallow mangrove channels that powerboats are too big to explore.

A kayak implies a more tactile control scheme than a motorboat, plausibly using paddle strokes on each side to steer and build momentum. Rockstar has not walked the mechanics through, and creators who attended the preview note it is unclear how deep the activity goes, but it is confirmed as something both protagonists can do. Asked about dates, Rob Nelson said the relationship system is dynamic and players make their own: some will want to go to the zoo, go kayaking or walk down the beach together, and all of it can happen while simply hanging out. Kayaking therefore works either solo or as a couple’s activity, with time spent together feeding how the relationship develops.

GTA has had jet skis, dinghies and yachts, but never a purely human-powered boat. Adding one signals Rockstar wants the water to feel like a place you can simply spend time in, matching the slower, more textured tone of the rest of the side content.

Kayaking and mini golf are the two activities described as completely new to the franchise, and analysis of the leaked Leonida map adds weight, listing kayaking among the activities identified from the map’s points of interest.
