Rockstar Has Cleared Up How GTA 6’s Region-Locked Codes Actually Work

When GTA 6 pre-orders went live back in June, retailers around the world started sticking their own region-lock disclaimers onto the listings. Some said the code only worked in your country, some listed a whole continent, some said nothing at all. Nobody was on the same page.

Rockstar has now put out its own official version through its support site. The short version is that the confusion was justified, and the rules are different depending on which console you are buying for.

If you are getting the game on Xbox Series X or S, the download code is not region-locked at all. You can buy it from a store on the other side of the world and redeem it on your account without anything breaking. Import a copy from a country with a good exchange rate, save some money, done.

PS5 owners do not get that luxury. Because PlayStation Network accounts are tied to a specific country, Rockstar has grouped PS5 codes into regional buckets. A code you buy in one bucket will only work on an account registered inside the same bucket. Trying to activate a code from the wrong region simply will not work.

Rockstar has not said why the two platforms are treated so differently, but the answer is basically that Xbox does not care where you are and PlayStation always has.

Here is the full breakdown. Your PS5 account has to be registered in one of the countries listed inside the same group as where you buy the code.

If your country is not on the list at all, no retailer in your country will officially sell you a copy, and any code you get elsewhere will need to match a supported region. Rockstar has not addressed that side of things.

Japan gets one extra rule. Any code sold in the Japanese market expires 170 days after the launch date. That puts the final possible activation date somewhere around 8 May 2027 based on a launch date of 19 November 2026. If you pick up a Japanese physical copy after that, the code inside might already be dead.

The reason is a Japanese law on prepaid payment methods. Anything valid for more than six months triggers heavier compliance obligations for the seller, so Rockstar has apparently just capped its codes at 170 days to sidestep the paperwork. Pure digital purchases through the PlayStation Store are not affected. Only the boxed cards sold at retail are.

This is also a reminder that the boxed version of GTA 6 has no disc. Rockstar confirmed weeks ago that there is no physical media release at launch on either platform. What you get in the box is a code card and nothing else, and the physical version only comes in the Standard Edition. If you want the Ultimate Edition extras you have to buy the add-on separately on the store after redeeming the base code.

Pre-load opens on 12 November 2026, one week before the game launches on 19 November. That is also when the codes go live and everyone starts finding out whether they bought from the right country.

The whole thing is easier than the wall of country names makes it look. If you buy the game from a store or storefront in the country where your PlayStation or Xbox account lives, nothing about this affects you. It is only a problem for people trying to import a cheaper copy from another region on PS5, or people juggling accounts across countries.

Rockstar’s own advice is exactly that. Buy from a retailer in the country tied to your account, and none of this matters. If you are going to break that rule, at least know what you are walking into.
