GTA 6 Review Copies Reported for Late October, and the Game Awards Door Is Open by One Day

+5 XP for Sharing

Insider Gaming reports GTA 6 reviews will publish before the November 19 launch, insider NateTheHate says copies reach critics before the end of October, and the Game Awards FAQ sets a November 20 cutoff that lets the game compete this year.

Quick take
  • Insider Gaming reported on October 14 that reviews go live before launch, and that it knows a preliminary embargo date it will not publish because the date can still move.
  • Asked on ResetEra whether review copies had shipped, NateTheHate answered: not yet, but they will before the end of the month.
  • The Game Awards FAQ requires games to be commercially available by November 20 at 9pm PT, so a November 19 release qualifies with one day to spare.

Two Reports Landed on the Same Day

On October 14, Insider Gaming reported that GTA 6 reviews will go live before the game launches on November 19. The outlet says it has learned a preliminary review embargo date and is deliberately not publishing it, because embargo plans tend to move in the final weeks before a release this size. The same day on ResetEra, the insider NateTheHate was asked whether review copies had already gone out and answered that they had not, but that they would before the end of the month.

Put the two together and the shape is clear: critics holding the game by October 31 would get at least nineteen days with it, and their verdicts would be public before anyone pays for a copy. Neither claim comes from Rockstar. The company has announced no embargo, no review programme and no schedule, so both reports sit in the reported-not-confirmed column, and they directly contradict a rumour from May which held that no codes would be sent out at all.

What Rockstar Did Last Time

Rockstar’s history points the same way, just on a tighter clock. GTA 5 reviews appeared on September 16, 2013, one day before the game shipped, and Red Dead Redemption 2 reviews also went live a single day before launch in 2018, a pattern GameSpot walked through when it picked up the new reports. So a pre-launch embargo would not be novel; what would be new is the length of the runway, since copies in critics’ hands by late October implies an access window of nearly three weeks.

Those are two separate dates, and it is worth keeping them apart. The access window is when reviewers receive the game; the embargo is when they may speak. Rockstar could hand out copies in October and still hold every verdict until the eve of launch, which is precisely what it did with both of its previous flagship releases.

The Game Awards Door, Open by 24 Hours

The review timing matters beyond buying decisions, because the awards question is now settled. The Game Awards FAQ states that games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9pm PT, with the fan-voted Players’ Voice category stretching to November 30. A November 19 launch clears the bar by a single day, a margin IGN described as making the cutoff by the skin of its teeth. There is no carve-out for Rockstar here: the cutoff was November 22 in 2024 and November 21 in 2025, so the second-to-last Friday of November is simply where the line falls.

Eligibility is not a nomination. Jury ballots are cast in a window when most of the world has barely started the game, which is where the review copies loop back in: the FAQ allows publishers to give voting outlets advance access so a late release can be judged in time. Copies going out in late October would do exactly that job.

The Calendar From Here

The next month now has a reported shape. Review copies before October 31, if NateTheHate is right. Digital preloads from November 12. Reviews at some point before November 19, if Insider Gaming is right. Launch on November 19, the eligibility line on November 20, and The Game Awards ceremony on December 10. The one date Rockstar itself has confirmed in that list is the launch, which is very Rockstar.
