A datamine from the PlayStation Game Size account says the GTA 6 release build requires PS5 system software 14.10, a version the new Relapse jailbreak cannot touch, and the requirement lands days before preloads put the game’s files on millions of consoles.
- The PlayStation Game Size account reports the GTA 6 PS5 build lists system software 14.10.00.00 as its minimum, which neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed.
- The Relapse jailbreak published in late September works on firmware 7.00 through 13.60, per Kotaku, and Sony’s 14.00 update on 16 September was the first to shut it out.
- Preloads begin on 12 November, which parks encrypted GTA 6 files on consoles for a full week before the game goes live on 19 November.
- Read together, the firmware floor looks less like a spec sheet entry and more like leak insurance for the riskiest week of the launch.
The Claim on the Table
PlayStation Game Size, a datamining account on X that tracks PlayStation backend metadata and has a steady record on file sizes and preload dates, posted that the GTA 6 release build requires PS5 system software version 14.10.00.00 or newer. That is the update Sony shipped at the start of October. No official source has confirmed the requirement, and backend metadata can change before launch, so the claim stays in the reported column for now.
A minimum firmware line is normally the least interesting row in a game’s metadata. This one is interesting because of what 14.10 happens to exclude.
How a Firmware Gate Shuts Out a Jailbreak
In late September a jailbreak called Relapse went public for consoles running firmware 7.00 through 13.60. Kotaku’s Lewis Parker reported on 29 September that it may have opened the floodgates to piracy, with users claiming it runs everything from Marvel’s Wolverine to The Witcher 3 Remastered. A jailbroken console has one defining constraint: it must stay on old firmware, because updating closes the exploit.
That is what turns a 14.10 floor from a formality into a wall. Sony’s 14.00 update on 16 September was the first to break Relapse, and 14.10 followed at the start of October. A game that refuses to boot below 14.10 refuses to boot on every jailbroken PS5 in existence, and it costs Rockstar nothing beyond a version number in the build metadata.

// Three readings of one number
What the reported 14.10 requirement could be, what supports each reading and what each would mean.
| Scenario | What supports it | What it would mean |
|---|---|---|
| Routine minimum, no intent | Big releases often target recent firmware for OS features and security patches | Nothing, beyond updating your console before 19 November |
| Deliberate anti-piracy floor | The timing: Relapse goes public, Sony patches it twice, and the biggest launch in history then requires the patched version | Pirated early copies cannot run on cracked consoles at launch |
| Placeholder that changes | Backend metadata is routinely revised before release | The preload build on 12 November gives the real answer |
The Preload Week Is the Pressure Point
Preloads begin on 12 November, as Rockstar confirmed on preorder day, one week ahead of the 19 November launch. From that morning, encrypted GTA 6 files sit on every preordering console in the world, and the only thing between those files and an early stream is the lock around them. For leak protection, that is the worst week of the entire campaign.
Rockstar knows exactly how that can go. Trailer 1 leaked roughly 15 hours early in December 2023 and forced the reveal off schedule, the studio has spent two years managing a steady drip of leaks, and Take-Two’s subpoenas in the hunt for the Cyberleek group show how far it will go after the people behind early footage. A console that cannot run the game while jailbroken is a console that cannot dump, crack or stream the preload early.
What Would Move Me Off This Read
Three things. Sony publishing 14.10 patch notes that name a feature GTA 6 actually needs would push this back toward the routine reading. The preload build on 12 November carrying a lower minimum would retire the story entirely. And an on-the-record comment from Rockstar or Sony would beat both, though neither company has commented on the requirement and recent form says neither will. Until one of those lands, the reported number plus the timing is the whole case, and it is a circumstantial one. Both launch consoles are covered in our platforms guide.
