Overview

The Cane Toad is one of five invasive species Michael Kane, Rockstar’s vice president of dynamic art, names in Game Informer’s Issue 382 cover story as a deliberate part of Leonida’s ecosystem. It has not yet been spotted in trailers or screenshots, so the confirmation is on the record rather than on camera.

Kane frames the invasive list as part of faithfully recreating Florida’s animal ecosystem across Leonida’s biomes, problems included.

Real-world context

Real cane toads are a Florida headache: large, poisonous to pets and happiest on suburban lawns, around canals and under porch lights, which is why the in-game animal is tagged urban here. The species was introduced to protect sugar cane and never left.

Trivia

The site’s category system files amphibians under Reptiles, so the toad sits in this list on a technicality it would probably appreciate.

Species basis
Rhinella marina
A large, toxic toad introduced to Florida in the 1930s and now widespread across the state’s south.
