GTA 6 ships with over 170 animal species, including more than 60 birds and over 30 land mammals. Michael Kane confirms manatees, flamingos, whales and sharks, fully simulated fur, and rare, discoverable and legendary animals to track across Leonida.
- Michael Kane, Rockstar’s VP of dynamic art, confirms over 170 species in Game Informer Issue 382: 60+ birds, 30+ land mammals, plus fish and reptiles.
- Manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators are named; marine life adds shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish with distinct movement.
- Invasive species are modelled on purpose: green iguana, feral cat, cane toad, nine-banded armadillo and the rhesus macaque monkey.
- Fur is fully simulated with dirt matting, wet clumping and coat variations, and animals split into rare, discoverable and legendary categories kept secret until launch.
Over 170 Species, Straight From the Source
Game Informer’s Issue 382 story puts a hard number on Leonida’s ecosystem: more than 170 animal species across the map, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and more. Several are Leonida natives that have never appeared in a Rockstar game. The figure comes from Michael Kane, Rockstar’s vice president of dynamic art, who frames it as a faithfulness project: “Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes of Leonida.”
Kane name-checks the biomes doing the work: urban and rural environments, aquatic life inland and in the ocean, and wetland habitats like the swamps. Our wildlife database has been tracking confirmed species since the first trailer, and this is the biggest single expansion of that list yet.
The Confirmed Cast, From Manatees to Jellyfish
Kane specifically confirms manatees, flamingos, pelicans and, as long shown, alligators. The marine roster goes deeper than anyone expected: different shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, each with distinct movement behaviours. Whales in a GTA game is a sentence that would have read as satire a year ago.

The scale matches what the Extended Look implied and the Grassrivers promised: a wetland that behaves like an ecosystem rather than a texture.
Florida Realism Means Invasive Species Too
The sharpest detail in the section is that Rockstar modelled Florida’s ecological problems, not just its postcard animals. On top of the previously spotted green iguana, GTA 6 includes the feral cat, the cane toad, the nine-banded armadillo and the rhesus macaque monkey, all invasive species that have become what the article calls a problematic part of the state’s ecological patchwork. Yes, Florida really has wild monkeys, and now so does Leonida.
RDR2 Fur Tech, Upgraded
The rendering claims lean directly on Red Dead Redemption 2’s animal work. Animals will display iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and distinct feather types, plus new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts. Fur is fully simulated and reacts to the world: dirt matting and clumping in environmental context, getting wet, and colour and coat variations between individuals of the same species. That last point matters for hunters, and the game has those.

Rare, Discoverable and Legendary Animals Return
GTA 6 will feature many animals for players to track, categorised as rare, discoverable and legendary, the same ladder Red Dead Redemption 2 built its best side content on. Rockstar is deliberately keeping the identities of these animals under wraps so they surprise players in the wild. Stewart closes the section hoping the skunk ape, Florida’s resident Bigfoot-adjacent cryptid, makes the cut, and a skunk ape reference did appear in the 2022 leak files, so the hope is not baseless.
