Overview

Yes, GTA 6 has wild monkeys. The Rhesus Macaque closes the invasive list Michael Kane gives Game Informer in Issue 382: green iguana, feral cat, cane toad, nine-banded armadillo and the rhesus macaque monkey, all modelled as what the article calls a problematic part of the state’s ecological patchwork.

Like the other two new entries on the list, the macaque is confirmed by name only so far, with no footage sighting to pin it to a location.

Real-world context

Florida’s real macaques descend from monkeys released on an island in the Silver River in the 1930s to spice up glass-bottom boat tours. They swam off immediately, and their descendants still roam the riverine forests around Silver Springs, which makes a Leonida equivalent easy to guess at.

Trivia

A monkey species in a GTA game is a first for the series’ modern era, and the obvious question, whether you can be mugged by one, remains unanswered.

Species basis
Macaca mulatta
A feral monkey population has lived along Florida’s Silver River since a 1930s tourist attraction released them.
