GTA 6 tracks health, stamina and focus, each raised permanently through training and boosted temporarily through food and drink. The gym runs on button-timed reps, weight and muscle change your body visibly, and the whole system stays optional until a hard mission exposes neglect.
- Three bars sit top left of the HUD: health, stamina and focus, and all three can be raised permanently through consistent training.
- The health bar has a core plus an extension segment that only consumables can fill, and healing alone never restores it.
- Gym workouts are button-timed reps in the San Andreas style, with a completion ring that a protein shake helps you fill faster.
- Rockstar has confirmed Jason and Lucia gain and lose fat and muscle depending on how they eat and train.
- A phone fitness app tells you when to work out, and the system is optional right up until a stressful mission tests it.
Three Bars and One Extension Segment
Top left of the HUD, three bars: health, stamina, focus. Every preview breakdown reads them the same way, and IGN’s hands-on confirms the trio. The interesting engineering sits inside the first one. The health bar is a core plus an extension segment, and the two obey different rules. The core refills through normal healing. The extension is overfill, granted only by consumables, and once it drains it stays empty until you eat or drink something that grants it again. Health above the line is a purchase, not a recovery.

All three stats can be raised permanently, and the sourcing on that is solid: consistent working out and side activities grow the bars themselves, while food and drink lease temporary space on top. Focus deserves its own note. In a firefight it buys slow motion and weak-point targeting, which is the combat guide’s territory, but previews also show it highlighting interactable items and nearby police out of combat, which makes it a scouting stat as much as a shooting one. One creator also reads Lucia’s health bar as slightly shorter than Jason’s in matched frames. Nobody else has measured it, so that stays a suspicion.
The Gym Loop, Timed and Metered
The gym has a proper loop, and creators who attended the Rockstar North sessions walked out with numbers. You pay for a membership at the front desk. Vending machines near the change rooms sell a spread of items, and a protein shake taken before training grants a temporary stamina and strength boost worth roughly an extra two reps per set. The workout itself is a button-timed exercise in the San Andreas mould, L2 and R2 prompts riding the barbell, and each completed exercise feeds a workout ring. The bench press example from the Extended Look is precise: Lucia does eight reps, once, and the ring climbs by 33 percent.

Complete three strength exercises, within an in-game day by one account, and you bank a timed health boost on top of the long-term growth. Treadmill time raises stamina. The gym gets its own minimap icon, so the game clearly expects repeat visits, and the membership fee files under the economy’s body-upkeep sinks, which the money guide prices alongside everything else.
What Raises What, on Current Evidence
Here is the current map from stat to source, graded. The strength and stamina lanes are well attested across the hands-on accounts. Focus is the gap: no preview names its training activity outright, and the best guesses, shooting range time and basketball, come from a single creator reasoning by analogy with older games. One channel also claims gym plus kickboxing buffs health and strength, but no kickboxing venue appears anywhere else in the coverage, so that row does not make the table.

// Stat sources
What raises each stat or boost, per the Extended Look and press hands-on accounts.
| Stat or boost | Raised by |
|---|---|
| Health (core) | Strength sets, substantial eating |
| Health (extension) | Consumable overfill only |
| Stamina | Treadmill and cardio |
| Focus | Unconfirmed, range suspected |
| Temp strength, stamina | Protein shake before lifting |
| Temp stamina, focus | Blitz Berry smoothie |
There is one more speculative lane worth logging: several creators suspect strength training feeds melee performance, the way it once did in San Andreas. Plausible, repeated, unproven. If Rockstar confirms it, the gym stops being self-care and starts being a weapons upgrade.
Weight, Muscle and the Mirror Test
This part is confirmed at the source. Creators who visited Rockstar were told directly that Jason and Lucia can gain and lose both fat and muscle, driven by how they eat and how they train. IGN’s preview draws the same lines: gym time increases muscularity and strength, overeating adds weight, and eating substantially boosts health. Exercise visibly tones the body and builds muscle on the model itself. Keep living on pizza and the game will show you, in third person, exactly what you have been doing.
The edges of the system are softer. One creator claims weight affects running speed and carrying, which no press account repeats, so it stays unverified. Appearance reaches beyond the waistline too: by one account Rockstar says sleep deprivation, partying and long stretches on the run all read on the characters’ faces, and a second source mentions a tired look from missed sleep. Whether sleep is a tracked stat with its own meter or just a visual state the engine paints on is an open question, and one creator floats full sleep tracking as a guess. So is the community reading that Lucia looks thinner in recent screenshots than in trailer one, which would be the physique system caught in the wild, or just a lighting change. And the rumour that a full grocery-cooking system was cut for pacing remains exactly that, a rumour.
The Fitness App Nags You Politely
The scheduling layer lives on the phone. Among the confirmed apps is a fitness tracker that tells you when to work out and logs your workout status, which means the game does not just offer a gym, it reminds you about it. Rockstar has salted the world with the same message. On the wall of Lucia’s apartment hangs a workout schedule poster reading “Workout every day. Don’t give up this time,” which is either set dressing or the most passive-aggressive tutorial prompt in the series.
Training is also social. The gym appears on the list of activities Jason and Lucia can do together, alongside dates and shared jobs, and doing it as a pair feeds the same bond meter the relationship guide tracks. Go alone and it is maintenance. Go together and it is a scene, another line item on the list of things this couple does side by side. That choice, small as it is, is the fitness system doing character work, and it is the kind of detail that suggests the app notifications will differ depending on which of the two has been skipping leg day.
Optional on Paper, Costly in Practice
Now the design question: do you have to do any of this? Rockstar’s answer, relayed consistently, is no. The fitness system is optional and GTA 6 is not a maintenance game. Nobody starves, nothing decays on a timer, and a player who never buys a membership can finish the story. The same accounts add the catch: neglected health and stamina show up exactly when you least want them to, in stressful missions where a short bar is the difference between a sprint that clears the fence and one that does not.
That is the trade the system is selling. Skip it and the game stays polite about it until it is not. Invest twenty minutes a session and the bars quietly grow, the extension segments stack on top, and the physique in the mirror starts matching the save file. The verdict from the evidence so far: the body is the one upgrade tree in GTA 6 you cannot buy outright, only earn. Everything else in Leonida takes cash. This takes reps.
