Overview
The Immobilizer Bypass is a piece of car theft equipment in Grand Theft Auto VI, positioned at the top of the game’s tiered vehicle security system alongside the key cloner.
The Immobilizer Bypass surfaced in the September 2022 GTA VI development leak. Rockstar has not named it in official material, but the Extended Look confirmed the system it belongs to. Rob Nelson told creators at the preview that vehicles are now stratified: older cars open with a Slim Jim and can be hotwired, while some vehicles need a key cloner to start, so smashing the window of a high-end car gets you in but not away. A key cloner also lets you enter and start such a car without setting off the alarm. The Immobilizer Bypass is understood by creators as the device for breaking into high-end luxury vehicles, the tier above the Slim Jim, and one analysis of the preview footage states that top-end cars cannot be hotwired and will not start without an immobiliser bypass. One creator who attended the preview said the WAINK phone scanner tells you which item a car needs, whether a Slim Jim, a key cloner or an immobiliser bypass, adding that he believes the bypass is still in the game. How the bypass and the key cloner divide the luxury tier between them is not yet confirmed.
None of these tools is available from the start. Rob said car theft items unlock by doing things for people in the world, in particular a vehicle fence, and that most of what he was using in the demo had been unlocked by that point in the story. That is why preview coverage says supercars parked on the street are effectively off limits early on, and why high-end cars cannot be registered as personal vehicles until later in the game.
The August 2026 clips appear to show the modern form of this system. Standing beside a parked car offers two options: smash window, marked by an exclamation point in a red shield, and clone key, marked by a key with wireless signal lines. In the footage the clone key option sits greyed out, read as Jason lacking the right gadget or access, and community speculation has the cloning handled through the phone or a small device that could allow discreet entry or even ownership of the vehicle.
Appearances
Spotted in source materials from the 2022 development leak, then referenced by the greyed-out clone key prompt on parked vehicles in the August 2026 leaked clips. The Extended Look did not show the bypass in use, but it did show the Slim Jim end of the same tiered system, and one creator reviewing the footage believes a branded in-game company for an immobiliser bypass product appears in the video, which is unconfirmed.
Trivia
Analysts see the tool ladder as a built-in progression curve: early on players rely on older cars because they are easier to enter, easier to hotwire and less likely to leave a digital trail, and only once tools like the key cloner and Immobilizer Bypass are unlocked do luxury thefts and high-end vehicle jobs open up. Detailed real-world basis still under community discussion.
